It is with broken hearts that we share the news of the passing of our amazing father, Will Furey, who passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones and the sounds of his favourite music, at The Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, April 27, 2025, after a very brief illness.
Dad was predeceased by; our sweet mother (Anne Marie Hennebury), on May 27, 2019, the love of his life for 56 years, his parents; William John (Wilbur) and Christine Furey (nee Shanahan), sister Marie, brother Phil, special Aunt Ellie Veitch, sister-in-law Moya Griffiths, brothers-in-law; Ron Power, Derrick Dewling and Aidan Hennebury, niece Paula Furey and nephew Joey Furey.
Left with fond and loving memories are his son, who was also his special buddy, William John (Bill) (Sandra), his daughters; Joanne (Bob) and TracyAnn (Thomas), treasured grandchildren; Aidan, Christian & Emily Claire, also Kurt, Kayla (Cole) and Kieron Fardy, loving sister; Tina (Bob Coleman), loving brothers; Joe (Shirley), Gerry (Glenys), sister-in-law; Barb Furey, special in laws whom Dad had a very close connection with; Yvonne (Frank Coleman), John Hennebury (Josephine), Janet (Dr. Lawrence Jardine), Marilyn Dewling, Andrea (Gary Penney), Gerard Hennebury (Gerry), Dave Griffiths, many nieces, nephews, cousins, life long friends Gary Corbett, Peter Byrne and a large circle of family & friends, especially Roy Mercer and Donald Devereaux.
For dad, family always came first, we are so thankful for the countless memories; salmon fishing and nights listening to the falls on Pinsent’s river, jumping into the motorhome last minute to chase Tommy & Mary Power across the province, all our weekends on our boat ‘The Anne Marie’, our years of skidooing at our cottage in Deer Park, yearly trips to see Mickey Mouse (who Dad would tease us about, by saying he was a rat), and the constant fun in the pool in our backyard, along with the red carpet parties, where everyone was always welcome!
Dad’s contribution to our community was one of impact. He dedicated significant time to service, both in public office and in the everyday moments that truly shaped the community. Dad dabbled in community theatre, playing the roll of the Lawyer in the play, Aunt Martha's Sheep. He received the Honours of the Fourth Degree of the knights of Columbus. As a Town Councillor, on the very first Town Council of Holyrood, dad played a key role in shaping some of the recreational sites and infrastructure that still exist in the community today. He brought a steady hand, a thoughtful voice, a common sense approach and a problem-solving spirit to every discussion. Always dependable and empathetic, dad earned the trust of colleagues and community members alike, by making decisions with fairness, kindness, and a commitment to what was best for all.
Dad, alongside of our mother, was a pillar of the community through our family-run Fleetline Bus Company, which over the years proudly transported thousands of students to their respective schools and countless field trips around the province as well as operated daily passenger bus runs from Carbonear to/and from St. John's. Dad had a great relationship with his drivers and in turn they kept their buses spotless, to offer more than just a ride, but a defined brand. For so many families around the bay, Fleetline provided a connection, a part of memories made, laughter shared, lessons learned and so many friendships. Dad prided himself on Fleetline’s long term safety inspection record with the Ministry of Transportation. As such he held a long-term contract with organizations such as the Canadian Armed Forces and Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Dad (and Mother), was an Ambassador for Newfoundland Tourism, as Fleetline Motorcoach Tours represented the province at multiple trade shows across Canada, bringing tourists from as far as Australia and China, by providing group motorcoach tours across our beautiful province.
Dad was a true champion of youth and community sports, he sponsored and supported local sport and community teams and organizations for decades, believing in the power of teamwork, sportsmanship, with a lot of fun along the way. Fleetline Bus Senior Men's Fast Pitch Team became a provincial championship team with historical significance and as well being recognized throughout Atlantic Canada.
We are sending our love to dad’s friends at North Pond Manor, with whom he loved to share a story or two, a dance and the odd Coors light. A special Thank you to all of the staff for your kindness, your support and for making dad feel like a Rockstar! While dad continued to reside at his home in Holyrood on the weekends, North Pond became dad’s home away from home thanks to the special bonds he developed especially with Sandra, Lolly, Cathy, Lori, William, Bev, Jennifer, Isuru and Bernice.
Special thanks to the entire team at Health Sciences 5 North A, even while short staffed, you all went above and beyond, taking the time to get to know our dad and offering a dignified approach!
