Phil was born in Conception Harbour and began his career with the Newfoundland Railway (Canadian National Railway) in 1956. He wore several hats with the railway being a conductor, brakeman and finally a trainman upon retiring two years after the railway closed in 1988. He briefly detoured from riding the rails in 1968 and became one of the first drivers for the CN Roadcruiser Bus Service that eventually replaced the passenger train service. Following retirement from the Newfoundland Railway, he became the caretaker of a family friend's six acre property which he did for the next 30 years until the age of 84. In addition, from 1973 to 2008, he also found the time to assist his wife in the operation of a personal care home for seniors.

The family is forever grateful for the care and compassion provided by Dr. Rod Martin and his team, nurses and staff of 5 NA Orthopedic Unit during his last 44 days.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Phil's life will be held once Covid-19 Restrictions have been lifted. No flowers by request, if so desired, donations in Phil’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
