It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Neil Butland, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Neil will be remembered for his quick wit, his warmth, and the way he brought joy and laughter into every room he entered. His legacy is one of kindness, humour and unforgettable memories that will live on in all who knew him. Neil was predeceased by his parents; Vera & Derm and brother, Dean.
Neil's greatest joy in life was his family. He was a proud father to Neil (Casey) and loving grandfather to Lilly, Calli, Jace, Anna and Rylee. He also leaves behind his cherished children; Leah and Devon, whom he loved deeply. His family meant everything to him, and he found purpose, pride and endless happiness in their presence.
Neil also leaves behind his siblings: Marilyn (Paul), Laura (Ed), Chris (Connie), Eddy (Janice), Claudette (John), and Carmella (Dave), along with a large extended family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who all adored him. He was a treasured uncle and a constant source of laughter and support to everyone lucky enough to know him.
Among his many close friendships, Neil shared a particularly special bond with his dear friend Kevin Butland—a friendship built on loyalty, humour and decades of shared stories and adventures.
Neil was the kind of person everyone gravitated toward. He was warm, incredibly funny, a little foolish in the best way, and always ready with a good story. He had a gift for making people laugh and for lifting spirits wherever he went. Whether in the woods or at a kitchen table Neil made every moment more fun.
He had a deep love for the outdoors, especially moose hunting, which was a favourite tradition of his. He also had a lifelong passion for sports and a special love for O'Donnell’s.
Professionally, Neil retired from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador after a distinguished and impactful career. Most notably, he served as the head of the provincial vaccination program, earning deep respect from healthcare professionals and colleagues across the province. His professionalism and dedication were so well-regarded that, upon his retirement, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Janice Fitzgerald took time during a COVID-19 public briefing to honour Neil’s contributions—a recognition that meant a great deal to him and his family.
Neil Butland lived with joy, humility, and heart. He was a man who loved deeply, laughed loudly, and left a mark on every life he touched. His memory will live on in the stories told, the laughs shared, and the love he gave so freely.
