It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearly loved Nell, Mary Ellen Fitzgerald on September 19, 2025, at the age of 88. She was born on July 23, 1937.
She was predeceased by her parents; Allan & amp; Dinah Fitzgerald, brothers: David, Carl, Ed and Amby and sisters; Dominica and Marg.
Leaving to mourn are her siblings: Frank, Kay (Fran), Reg, Bish and Al, twenty-seven nieces and nephews whom she adored and a long list of great nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Nell was known by everyone who knew her as a strong, independent lady. She was
born blind due to a three-month pre-mature arrival. She left home at the age seven to travel to Halifax to the School for the Blind. She graduated and returned home to attend Memorial University, where she found her away around campus with a cane. She became a clinical stenographer and worked at the Miller Center and St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. She lived alone, independently her entire life, despite encouragement to live with family or go in a home. That was never an option. Such an independent spirit right to the end. She loved a game of crib or scrabble and enjoyed listening to old time Newfoundland music. She loved to travel and was always willing to go.
Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Nell’s life at the Mount Carmel Community Hall, Main Road, Mount Carmel, SMB. on Saturday, September 27, 2025 at 2:00 pm with inurnment to follow at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery where she will rest with those who have gone before her.
A special thank you to the nurses and staff on 7th Floor West, at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital. We appreciate your compassion and kindness.
Rest in peace our sweet Nell. It’s not good-bye but see ya later.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Canadian Institute for the Blind (CNIB) or a charity of choice.
