We are sorry to announce the passing of our mom, Mary Catherine Costigan (neé Hawco), on Monday, July 14, 2025. Mom’s wish to die at home was granted; she just slipped away peacefully exactly where she wanted to be. What a run! What a lady! She would have been 104 years old in October. It’s been a longstanding joke in our family that our mom was a witch because to her children she seemed to know what they were going to do long before they had a chance to do it! She said that the name suited her because she always had a broom in her hand. It’s time you hung up your broom, mom! We’ve enjoyed your company for so long that we’ve gotten greedy. Go find dad, dance among the stars and be young again. We’ll take it from here. You will never be forgotten because we will talk about you and miss you every day.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Cyril; her sons: Cyril, Patrick and Raymond; daughter-in-law Susan; son-in-law Frank; brothers and sisters-in-law: Fred (Mary), Patrick, John (Doreen), James, Raymond (Betty), Albert (Bride) and her sister, Viola . She was the last survivor of her siblings. As you can well imagine, with a woman of mom’s age, this list is too long to mention everybody.
She will be forever missed by her surviving family: Theresa (Larry), Marion, Tom(Karen), Viola (Allan), Rose (Cary), and Jim. Also, her daughters-in-law: Helen, Carol and Juliette, her best friend and sister-in-law Mary Hawco, and her good friend, Bob Walsh, whom she treated like one of her sons, as well as all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her nieces and nephews, and her many friends from Labrador City and Hr. Main/Holyrood whom she loved to reminisce about and never forgot a name. The stories might have gotten embellished over the years! We love you, mom. Until we all meet again!
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no viewing or funeral service. Remember her fondly whenever she comes to mind.
