John Mahoney Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Mahoney, who passed peacefully away in the presence of his cherished family at the Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, November 9th, 2025, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.

John was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Alice Mahoney, as well as his parents-in-law, Albert and Minnie Dalton.

Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his devoted wife of 49 years, Patricia (née Dalton); his daughter Stephanie; son-in-law Michael; and beloved granddaughter Aliya. John also leaves behind his siblings Betty (Kevin), Alice (George), and Leo (Rose). He will be fondly remembered by his large extended family—including his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends—whom he cared for so deeply.

John was known for his kind heart, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humour. His siblings often said he was the best brother anyone could ask for—always ready to lend a hand and share a laugh. He thought the world of his sisters and made sure to visit with his brother every week when he could.  That same warmth extended to Patricia’s family, who he became a part of when most were very young.  Some say they can’t remember a time when John was not around.

As a young man he had a passion for cars, oftentimes picking up the Dalton siblings to tag along on his dates with Patricia.  While they marvelled at the new car, he stayed quiet while they littered the back seat with fries and gravy.  That was just the type of man he was.  As the siblings grew up, many requested John drive one of his fancy cars on their wedding day.

John was always at the heart of family fun and mischief—scaring his mother on Halloween, teasing his siblings, or playfully unscrewing the Christmas lights while visiting friends and claiming they must have gone out. There was always a laugh when John was in the room.  His grin would always reveal he was up to no good and he was often caught sneaking extra treats to Stephanie’s dogs.

John was a devoted and selfless husband who cherished his wife throughout his life.  He took great pride in his daughter and shared a special bond with his son-in-law, whom he lovingly called “the son he never had.” In his final days, Stephanie and Michael remained by his bedside, ensuring he was never alone. He passed peacefully, holding Stephanie’s hand.

John’s greatest joy in life was his granddaughter Aliya, affectionately known as “the little one.” He cherished every moment with her—whether picking her up from school, watching her play, or simply relaxing together at home. They both shared a love of reading, and Poppy was always a captive audience for anything Aliya wanted to show off.

John valued his career with Black and MacDonald and the friendships he built there.  He was admired for both his deep knowledge of the field and his lighthearted spirit.  His coworkers will remember him fondly for his wisdom, humor, and kindness.

At John’s request, cremation has taken place.
