Hubert Thomas Furey

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Hubert Thomas Furey, 84, of Hr. Main.  Predeceased by father George Furey, mother Margaret Woodford (nee LaCour), step-father John Woodford and brother George Furey.

Also predeceased by sister-in-law Bernice “Bece” Furey, brothers-in-law John James and Robert “Bob” Lewis, nephew Glenn Furey, grand niece Erica Bartlett, family friend Elodie Bébin, mother-in-law Bridget McDonald and members of the Whelan family.

A lifetime love of education and history led to a 21 year career as District Superintendent for the R.C. school board while also balancing 5 children involved in constant after school activities.  His work ethic and sense of humour are among his most remembered features. After his retirement he embarked on his second career as author of As the Old Folks Would Say, and The Most Perfect Gift, and performer of his own written recitations as a member of the performing group “From Stage to Stage Productions”. 

Leaving to mourn his devoted wife of 54 years Eleanor (nee Whelan), children David (Trina), Paul, Hubert (Audrey), Nanette (Doug) Bishop, Edward, and grandchildren Bridget, Hubert Matthew, Molly, Sophie, Isabel and Lucas. 

His large family also included brothers and sisters, George (Bece), Marianne (Bob) Lewis, Ig (Barb), Lillian (John) James, Jack (Mary), and many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks go out to staff of 7 West St Clare's hospital, Dr. H.R. Lake, Pharmasave, Dunphy's Funeral Home, and Father Mike Barker. Thanks also to his home care workers, Margo Whelan, Martina Joy, and Audrey Kelly.

Wake services to be held at Dunphy's Funeral Home, Holyrood on Monday, 22 July and Tuesday, 23 July from 2:00 – 8:00 pm. These are scent-free events.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Harbour Main, on Wednesday, 24 July at 10:30 am with cremation to follow. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed with the link available below.

If friends so desire, donations can be made to Sts. Peter and Paul Parish roof project.
