David Joseph Lewis

David J. Lewis passed peacefully away at Health Sciences Center on November 15, 2023 at 82 years of age.  David was predeceased by his parents, James and Mary (nee Barrett), brothers; Leslie and Fred, sisters-in-law; Martha and Aggie, brother-in-law Richard Gallagher.

Leaving to mourn with fond memories are his sisters Mary Gallagher, Rose MacNamara (Ray), brothers Ray (Dot) and Jim (Anita).  Also leaving to mourn many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and caring neighbours Joe and Peter Joy, Fred Hickey and special friends Fred and Ann Skanes.  A special thank you to Pleasant View Towers, ICU and 4 South B (Health Sciences) doctors and staff who cared for David in his final days.

David received his early education from Holy Cross School, Holyrood.  He graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Commerce, Education and a Masters of Education Degrees.  He taught at various schools throughout the province, expressed on a number of occasions his greatest reward was knowing he had made a difference in his students’ lives.  He was an avid outdoorsman – trouting and hunting were his favorite pastimes.  He also enjoyed dances at the community events.  His greatest enjoyment, however, came when he was playing hockey.  He was a very skillful goaltender, played for many teams throughout the province and enjoyed the game into his later years.  He will always be remembered. 

Resting at Dunphy’s Funeral Home, Holyrood. Visitation will take place on Sunday, November 19th from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Holyrood on Monday, November 20th, 2023 at 10:30 am with cremation to follow. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, November 21st at Holy Cross Cemetery, Holyrood.
